With in-house translators and a network of industry specialists, JC’s bilingual Project Managers have access to the right resources for a job, can move projects forward to meet client deadlines and deal directly with the various language issues that occur in the translation process.

Quality

Japan Communications manages quality with a series of procedures and guidelines for Translators and Project Managers. Some of the key aspects of these include:

  • The process of TEP (Translation, Editing, Proofing) is based on the principle that every translation must be thoroughly checked and revised by a second translator. As a general rule, the editing and proofing is always done by in-house staff.
  • Editors/Proofreaders provide feedback through the Project Manager to the translator. This supports the ongoing development of the translators and is also a chance for further consideration of the changes made or issues encountered during the editing process.
  • A translator is always a native speaker of the target language.
  • Good translation quality starts with the initial assessment of the project. This is coordinated by the Project Manager and involves the input and participation of the client and translator. The requirement and availability of supporting materials such as reference and glossaries are determined, all project details are confirmed and the files are reviewed by a linguist/translator for the selection of an appropriate translator.
  • Project management and client communication – Translation often involves a query process where issues and questions are checked with the client.
  • Training and ongoing improvement – Translators meet once a week for training and to discuss translation problems and solutions.
  • General Procedures and Tools – JC translators benefit from the procedures that have been developed over the company’s 25 year history. These procedures help prevent problems from occuring. JC staff also train on and learn the latest software tools for efficiency, consistency of terminology and overall quality.

  2. Send in project details and the material for translation, then receive a quotation for turnaround time and cost
  3. Approve quotation - depending on the project, consultation or progress reports by the Project Manager
  4. Receive translation and confirm

Cost

Translation cost is generally based on an English word count (E > J translation) or Japanese character count (J > E translation). The per word or per character cost can be affected by a number of factors, such as:

  • Degree of technicality
  • Size of project
  • Expected turnaround
  • Formatting requirements (e.g. graphics in the source document)
  • Editing and Copywriting
  • Repetitions in content

Japan Communications accepts most major world currencies and credit cards.

Turnaround, Format and Delivery

JC strives to meet any client schedule. Typical turnaround is 2 business days for a translation under 2000 English words and another business day for each additional 2000 words. Larger projects or rush projects can be coordinated with multiple translators. The translation is most often delivered by email in the same format as the original source document or as a basic text document.
